A few of our 5th Grade Superhero Ambassadors during our Character Education Kick-off!
"A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles" --Christopher Reeves
During the 2015-16 school year, we will continue to FLY with our Superhero Character Education! Our program is based on a book called "What's Under Your Cape" by Barbara Gruener. I first heard about this book while attending the 2014 ASCA National Conference in Orlando, FL & I was immediately hooked! I've also been able to connect with Barbara Gruener via Twitter and I feel truly blessed to have gained a new colleague & friend! Feel free to check out #whatsunderyourcape on Twitter, FB, and Pinterest!
So, what's this program all about!?
As adults, we can appreciate the special individuals in our lives that have served as positive role models and mentors along the way. You might recall a teacher, a volunteer, a neighbor, a family friend, etc. that has helped guide you along this journey we call life. I encourage each of you to think about who these individuals are in your life and the important role they have played in helping you shape the person you are today. Collectively, we owe many thanks to these everyday "Superheroes" in our lives :)
One of my goals as your child's school counselor is to help your child identify what their unique superpower is! Perhaps they are a stellar student, a genuine friend, a fantastic team player, or someone others can turn to when they need a listening ear. Whatever their talent may be, we have SO many OP Superheroes in the making!!!! What kind of impact will they make on their classrooms, our school community, and our society at large?! Many of our students have MULTIPLE superhero powers; however, my goal is for all OP students to identify at least one reason they, too, are SUPERHEROES!
Our 5th grade Superhero Ambassadors at OP will be assisting our students to identify their Superhero qualities as well! We will provide ongoing character education, activities, and entertaining videos to help EXCITE and ENGAGE every student at OP! I will be meeting with small groups of our Superhero Ambassadors on a weekly basis to create WOPE news clips, skits, etc. to embrace our character traits!
Our theme will support the following SUPERHEROES acronym illustrated within the book:
Attention Parents/Guardians: *If you are interested in supporting our OP Superheroes program by brainstorming ideas, assisting our 5th grade Superhero Ambassadors with IMovies, etc., please email me at [email protected]I would also love to host a parent book study in which we can read "What's Under Your Cape" together to further enhance our school-wide program. Please let me know if you are interested! It's a quick, easy read and I'd love to have parents & staff members working together on this initiative! Thank you in advance for your support!
Stay tuned for more updates about our OP Superheroes!!! It's time to FLY!
